UNIT 9: TEACH STUDENTS ONLINE SKILLS
Students need to understand how to properly search for and find reliable material. The three 'search smart' basics are:
Choosing the right search terms: The words they use and the order of the words makes a difference in the search results. Helping students find the exact words to use when searching a certain topic.
Understanding search results: Helping students recognize what are ads and where to find good results to their search.
Narrowing a search to get the best results: Using modifiers to help find the right results, like if you use a hyphen (-) before a word in the search it will exclude results that contain this word. There are also filters to further narrow the responses.
A huge part of Digital Literacy for students is properly giving credit to the sources they used. Students can also filer searches to copyright free information. Students also need to pay attention to the reliability of sources and so students should look at the URLs of the website for if it is a .com, .org, or .gov ( .com represents the word “commercial” (businesses like to use this extension) and .org means “organization” (often used by charities, non-profits, or societies)). Just because a website looks good doesn't mean that the website has good information. Students should double check the facts from the website and also look at the source of the website.
When using Google tools, Chrome should be used as the browser for the best results. Google Chrome Extensions can also be super helpful. Ones like Grammarly can help check grammar and spelling on Chrome, there are extensions to help cite the website. This can help make sure none of the students are forgetting to cite their information. Read and Write is an extension that can help students read along with the website and make notes on it. There are many tools that Chrome offers.
